Home Schooling: Yesterday & Today

A BRIEF HISTORY OF HOMESCHOOLING

Background

Homeschooling was common up until the late 19th century. Most children received a substantial part of their education within the home. In the late 19th century, states started passing compulsory attendance laws. These laws compelled all children to attend public schools or a private alternative. In this way, education outside the home became the norm for children.

Homeschool Is Introduced

It was in the 1970s that American educator John Holt emerged as a proponent of homeschooling. He challenged the notion that the formal school system provided the best place for children to learn. Slowly, small groups of parents began to remove their children from the public schools.

Homeschool Becomes Legal

Today, homeschooling is becoming part of the mainstream. It is legal in all 50 states. In addition, a growing number of states are making attempts to engage the homeschooled population for at least part of the day.

Is Homeschooling Good for Children?

Discussions about whether homeschooling is good for children can be emotionally charged. Some scholars are critical about the increasing number of homeschoolers, while some others view homeschooling in a different light.

They believe that homeschooling families are more responsive to a child’s individual needs and interests. They may be better at taking advantage of learning experiences that naturally arise in home and community life.

GET HOMESCHOOL NOW

by Frances Mitchell, Founder

I founded GET HOMESCHOOL NOW because I believe accredited homeschool programs Nevada are a positive alternative to public education and offer a better way to educate your child.

I was not homeschooled, but I always felt like I had the spirit of someone who was.  I was always curious and never met a book I didn’t like.  I always wanted to do my own thing, but the schools I attended often kept saying, “You can’t do that, we have our own plan”.  Had homeschooling been an option, I believe it would have made a significant difference in my education and my life.  It would have broadened my view of life, rather than narrowing it.

Background

I have AS and BS degrees in Business Administration and, over the years, have gone back to school for various classes and certifications. I never stopped learning, even if it didn’t involve a degree.

I’ve often been told by friends and co-workers how “smart” they thought I was and how knowledgeable I was about a whole range of subjects. I told them I just pursued my interests and there’s no reason they couldn’t encourage the same in themselves.  One doesn’t need to pursue a degree to pursue learning – just the desire to seek it out and engage.

Why I Turned to Homeschooling

I often thought about being a teacher, but decided against it when I learned how broken and limited the public school system was becoming.  I came to homeschooling when my niece was born. I wanted to help homeschool her and read every book I could on the subject and contacted Nevada accredited homeschool programs for additional information.  However, her mother ultimately decided to send her to private school.

It was then that I decided I wanted to help families in their quest for a decent and safe education for their children. Since most people don’t have the income a for private school, I decided to create Nevada homeschooling programs that would offer a range of services, each relating to particular aspect of the homeschool process.

Home Schooling in Nevada Can Be in Your Future

While there are more families than ever before homeschooling in Nevada, there are still many that are intimidated by the concept of teaching their children.  They need to know they have options which can substantially improve their child’s education while simultaneously encouraging them to grow into their own true self.
